Native to Germany, meat loaf is a dish that has been traditional to American family meal time for decades, particularly since the Great Depression. Different styles have emerged from the regular meatloaf recipes, whether it is with different types of meat like turkey, or from additions of herbs or sauces. When made with applesauce, the meat loaf has a sweet flavor and a smoother texture. With simple ingredients and a little time to bake, you can make applesauce meatloaf for about four to six guests.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the meat, applesauce, onion, green pepper, minced garlic, bread, egg, salt and pepper thoroughly in a large bowl with your hands.
Shape the meat mix into a loaf and place it in the loaf pan that has been sprayed with a non-stick coating. Continue to shape the loaf in the pan.
Brush the ketchup thickly over the top and sides of meatloaf. Put into the oven and bake for two hours or until crispy and browned on top.
Remove the pan from the oven and let it rest for about five minutes. Slice and serve.
