Easy Vegan Apple Pie

Overview

People who choose not to eat any food products that come from animals are vegans. This foods products also include dairy products, eggs and honey. With the wide variety of foods and products that vegans avoid, they often get imaginative to create tasty recipes using the foods they do enjoy. Harvest your best apples during the autumn. You can use them to make an easy vegan apple pie using delicious ingredients to enjoy a tasty dessert.

Step 1

Prepare the piecrusts by mixing the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the sunflower oil and the water and stir the ingredients with a fork to moisten them. Stir the ingredients with a wooden spoon until they hold together firmly. Divide the dough in half and set one-half aside while you roll out the bottom crust.

Step 2

Spread a sheet of wax paper onto the counter and roll out the piecrust with the rolling pin until it is just slightly larger than the pie plate and approximately 1/4-inch thick.

Step 3

Transfer the piecrust to the pie plate by lifting the wax paper and inverting the piecrust over the pie plate. Press the piecrust into the plate with your fingers and pinch the edges of the piecrust to make it decorative.

Step 4

Roll out the second piecrust using the same technique and reserve this piecrust for the top of the pie.

Step 5

Prepare the pie filling. Peel, core and slice the apples and place them into a large bowl. Add the Sucanat, nutmeg, cinnamon and flour, stirring to incorporate all of the ingredients well.

Step 6

Pour the filling into the prepared piecrust and spread it out evenly.

Step 7

Invert the second piecrust over the apple filling and seal the piecrust gently around the outer perimeter of the pie by pinching it with your fingers.

Step 8

Cut three holes in the top of the pie with the sharp knife, spacing them evenly over the top of the pie.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit and bake the apple pie for approximately 45 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven when you see the filling bubbling through the holes in the crust and the edges of the crust look lightly brown.

Step 10

Cool the pie on a cooling rack and then serve.

  • 6 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup sunflower oil
  • 5 tbsp. cool water
  • 5 organic apples (any cooking variety such as Macintosh or Empire)
  • 1/3 cup Sucanat
  • 1 tbsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. whole-wheat flour
  • 2 large bowls
  • Fork
  • Wooden spoon
  • Wax paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Pie plate
  • Sharp knife
  • Cooling rack
