How to Replace a Gas Trimmer Starter Rope

When the starter cord on your gas powered trimmer breaks or becomes jammed, you may think that you'll need to buy a whole new trimmer. However, this is not the case. You can purchase a new starter assembly at either a hardware store or order one online and install it yourself. It should only take you about five minutes and will save you a lot of money.

Step 1

Disconnect your gas trimmer's spark plug wire from the spark plug.

Step 2

Locate the screws holding the starter assembly in place. The screws should be located near the handle of the pull cord.

Step 3

Use a hex driver to remove the screws. The starter assembly should now slide right off.

Step 4

Slide the new starter assembly into place and give the cord a little pull. This will engage the cord in the engine's crankshaft.

Step 5

Replace the screws and tighten into place. Put the spark plug wire back into place. Test your new starter rope by starting your gas trimmer as per the manufacturer's directions.
