Instructions for Growing Grass by Seed

A lawn full of lush, green grass can dramatically improve the appearance of a home. One of the most important steps in growing beautiful grass is planting the seeds. While grass seed can essentially be thrown on top of the ground and grow, it will grow more evenly and produce a fuller-looking turf if you put a little more work into it. Whether you are planting grass over an entire yard or simply reseeding damaged spots, the process for planting grass seeds remains the same.

Step 1

Loosen the top 3 inches of soil with a hoe. If you're planting seed in a large area, use a tiller to loosen the soil. Loose soil will promote drainage and make it easier for the roots to grow.

Step 2

Level the soil with a rake. Discard any weeds or rocks that you come across.

Step 3

Fill a seed spreader with seeds according to the directions on your particular spreader. Walk the seeder up and down the lawn in straight rows until the entire lawn is seeded. If planting in a small area, sprinkle the seed by hand.

Step 4

Rake the soil to incorporate the seeds into it. The seeds are more likely to blow away or get eaten by birds if they are sitting on the surface.

Step 5

Water the soil daily to keep it moist. Grass seed germinates faster with moisture.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not use herbicides on the soil before you plant grass.
