Solar Landscape Lighting Ideas

Solar landscape lighting uses an efficient light bulb, usually LED, and a battery that can be recharged by sunlight to light up the night. One of the best features of solar lighting is that it does not require any wires or plugs, making it perfect for places other lighting couldn't go. Solar landscape lighting is so popular that you have many options to choose the perfect lighting for your outdoor oasis.

Path Lights

Solar path lights are commonly used to light driveways at night, but they can be a great addition to any walkway or garden path. Lights may be colored or clear. Try hanging lanterns or post lights to shed more light on your path, patio or garden. Lighted stepping stones can help you create a lighted path through your lawn or garden.

Decorative Lights

Decorative solar lighting is mainly for ambiance. Small table lights make for a perfect romantic meal on the patio. Lighted fairies, toadstools, ladybugs or flowers add a touch of whimsy to your garden. Some solar lights can be used underwater in a pool or fountain, and a few even float on top of water. You can get personalized solar address lights so your house number is easy to see at night.

Solar spotlights can be used to light a particular object, such as a flag. Motion-activated spotlights are a good idea for safety and security. Floodlights can be placed anywhere you want to illuminate a larger area; many of these use bright halogen bulbs. Be aware that with solar lighting the watt rating has to do with power consumption and is not comparable with incandescent or fluorescent lighting. Instead, look at the number of LEDs (light emitting diodes) in the solar light. One or two LEDs is more decorative, while three or more is enough for security or floodlights.

String or Tube Lights

Solar string lights are perfect for outdoor holiday decorating, but they can be used year-round to accentuate any special feature in your outdoor area. Themed party lights are sometimes available as solar. Small solar LED lights are also available enclosed in a weatherproof tube for maximum durability and flexibility. Tube lights can often be used to light a spa or fountain.
