In the past, growing mushrooms at home was complicated and laborious at best and a dismal failure at its worst. Today, kits that can be purchased that make mushroom growing much more manageable. The kit contains everything the beginning mushroom gardener needs to get started and will produce enough mushrooms for several harvests. Many garden centers and nurseries sell mushroom kits for various types of mushrooms, including button, shiitake and oyster.
Soak the wood, which may be quickly as overnight or several days. Follow the instructions in the kit for specifics to your mushroom type.
Wrap the kit in the provided plastic bag after the soaking period. Place the kit in a warm, dark area of your home or garage.
Check the kit daily for moisture. Sprinkle water as needed to keep the kit moist to the touch without dripping water.
Remove the plastic after the amount of time specified in the instructions for the specific variety of mushroom. Move the kit, if called for in the instructions, to the proper sunlight environment.
Harvest the mushrooms when they reach the desired size. In most cases, a sharp knife will cleanly cut the mushroom from the log or compressed wood block. Some mushrooms can be plucked from the growing medium.
