Annual Plants for Pots

Whether gardeners have little or no gardening space, desire to spruce up their landscapes with containers, or have a patio or pool area needing color, planting annuals inside pots gets the job done. There are a vast variety of annually, blooming plants that grow well inside pots. Colors and growth styles are almost unlimited. As with any plant growing inside a container, regular watering is required as soil mediums dry out faster.

Impatiens is an annual blooming plant well suited for growing inside pots. Various cultivars bloom in a vast array of colors including pinks, reds, purples, whites and orange. Plants fill with masses of colorful blooms fall throughout springtime, with plants lasting longer in cooler regions of the United States. Impatiens is also suitable for use in hanging baskets and butterfly gardens as it attracts butterflies. Impatiens has a low drought and salt tolerance. They grow and bloom best when given regular, frequent doses of water, and will begin to wilt when watering is required. They grow best when situated in full to partial shade and tolerate a variety of well-draining, organic soil mediums. Plants grow 1/2 to 1 foot tall and have a spreading habit of 1 foot. In cooler regions, impatiens can act as a perennial.

Petunia is an annual flowering plant that has a variety of cultivars, from trailing to upright. Gardeners desiring an addition to their butterfly gardens should use petunia, as it attracts both butterflies and birds. Depending on cultivar, flowers bloom in colors of white, reds, pinks, purples and maroon, with some species bicolor. Flowers bloom in fall and continue throughout springtime. In warm areas of the United States, petunia can act as a perennial. Plants grow fast, reaching a mature height of 1/2 to 1 1/2 feet with a spread of 1 foot. It tolerates well-draining potting mediums. Petunia has a medium salt tolerance and a low tolerance to drought. Plants will grow and have the best blooms when given regular doses of water. Situate plants in areas receiving full to partial sun throughout the day.
