How to Soak Lawn Seed in Tea


Soaking grass seed in tea is believed to help the germination process. The combination of soaking in water and absorbing tannins from the tea soften the seed casings, allowing the grass to sprout more evenly and robustly. By presoaking your grass seeds in tea before planting, you may be able to plant a thicker, lusher lawn.

Step 1

Brew a strong batch of tea. Use about one bag of tea for each cup of water.

Step 2

Remove the tea bags and allow the tea to cool.

Step 3

Place grass seeds in a bucket. Add about 2 tbsp. of tea for each pound of grass seed.

Step 4

Refrigerate seeds and tea for three to five days.

Step 5

Line a flat surface with newspaper. Spread the seeds on the surface and allow them to dry for two to three days.

Step 6

Sow grass seeds as normal.
