When spreading fertilizer on your lawn or seeding it, you'll want to use a lawn spreader. It is also commonly known as a broadcast spreader or fertilizer spreader. All lawn spreaders contain a hopper where you pour the fertilizer or grass seed. They also have a dial that you can set how fast the product will be dispensed. As you push the spreader across your lawn, it agitates the product inside the hopper and dispenses it into a plate, which then evenly spreads it across your lawn.
Clean your lawn spreader of any foreign material or caked-on old fertilizer with soap and water. Allow the spreader to fully dry after cleaning.
Fill the lawn spreader with the product you intend to spread on your lawn. Set the spreader dial to the setting that is indicated on the product bag.
Push the lawn spreader to the section of lawn you wish to dispense the product. Press the dispensing lever against the handle and push the spreader across the lawn to dispense the product.
Walk across the lawn in a straight path while dispensing the product. Look to see how wide of a spread your lawn spreader has and walk back and forth in paths that allow the product to overlap 6 to 12 inches. This ensures total coverage.
Release the dispensing lever and push the spreader back to where you want to store it. Seal any leftover product in an airtight container for future use.
