Rose flowers grow in a variety of sizes, types and colors, from sprawling ground-cover roses to tall tree roses. Many rose plants flower from spring to fall in colors that range from delicate pastels to deep rich reds. Accentuate your landscape with flowering rose bushes and plants for aromatic color that spans several seasons.
Miniature roses grow between 1 and 3 feet tall with petite flowers and dense foliage that bloom continuously during the summer months. Sometimes called sweetheart roses, miniature roses are a good choice for container gardening on your patio or throughout your yard. Don't let the size fool you--petite roses are hardy plants that grow well in perennial gardens or along a garden pathway. Sweetheart rose flowers are often used in corsages and delicate floral bouquets.
Climbing rose flowers can spread over a trellis, an arbor, a fence or a wall in your garden. Climbing rose flowers often bloom more heavily in the spring and then sporadically during the summer months. Certain climbing rose cultivars will bloom with a profusion of flowers again in the fall. The individual rose flower blossoms on climbers might be larger than flowers on standard rose bushes.
Most kinds of rose plants can be classified as a shrub rose, but the category can also refer to a hardy, disease-resistant type of shrub bush with fragrant flowers that bloom throughout the summer season. Shrub roses are often planted as landscape hedges or as an ornamental focal point in the yard. Old shrub roses can grow up to 6 feet tall, but modern shrub roses are bred to be more compact.
Tree roses have trunks that rise to a bush of flowering foliage. Varieties of tree roses include miniature tree roses with an average height of 18 inches and giant weeping tree roses with trunk heights that measure up to 5 feet tall. Tree rose trunk heights are measured exclusive of the flowers and foliage at the top of the trunk. Tree rose flowers might be shades of pink, white, yellow, lavender orange and red.
Species roses are nature's original kind of rose flowers that grow throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Species rose flowers most often bloom once during the early summer in colors ranging from crimson to white. The rose flowers often have five petals followed by colorful hips that last into winter.
