Building a compost bin in your backyard will provide you with plenty of compost for your gardens and will help the environment. You can make wooden compost bins, wire bins or a compost pile. The ideal compost bin will be enclosed so that you can keep wild animals out. One compost bin that you can make yourself only requires a few supplies and tools to make and it will hold all of the materials that you put into it.
Use a sledge hammer to pound four 4-foot-long posts or wooden stakes into the ground. Pound each stake into the ground 1 foot deep. Measure 3 feet to the next corner post and pound it in the ground. Measure 3 feet from that post to the next corner post and from the corner post to the last corner. You will have a 3-foot-by-3-foot square.
Cut 10 pieces of 12-inch wire ties with tin snips. You can use a thin gauge or lightweight wire for the ties.
Wrap the wooden snow fence around the outside of the stakes to form an enclosed square compost bin. Use two wire ties on each corner to secure the fencing to the stake. Place one tie 2 inches from the top of the stake and fencing and the other tie 2 inches from the ground.
