Landscape pavers are flat stone tiles that come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. They are useful in gardens, patios, pools and any other area where outdoor landscaping takes place. Depending on the style of paver and the way it is used, these stones can contribute to rustic and modern landscaping designs as well as ornate and formal layouts.
Rustic Garden Path
Pavers can be used to make a rustic garden path. Use large pavers, staggered every foot and a half, for simple stepping stones in a garden. For a denser path, lay out non-interlocking paving stones side by side so that there are small patches of dirt between them. Grow ornamental grass such as sedge grass or blue fescue or another low ground cover between and around the pavers to create a wild, natural look. Surround the path with a buried plastic barrier to prevent the grass from invading the rest of your garden.
Elevated Garden Beds
Use pavers to create raised garden beds. Build retaining walls 3 to 4 feet high surrounding a growing area, and fill in the bed with high-quality commercial soil. Plant the beds with flowers, specimen trees and other decorative plants. If your landscape has a continuous slope, build garden beds at different levels, then use pavers to construct a staircase between the different beds. Not only will this create an attractive, tiered effect, but it will also make it much easier to work in your garden by allowing you to do the work without bending over.
Paving stones are fireproof, heavy and durable, making them an excellent material for constructing firepits. Dig out a flat, cylindrical pit about 3 feet wide and 1 to 2 feet deep. Clear away any plants or other flammable objects a few feet in every direction. Line the bottom with pavers and construct a wall around the pit with the stones. Finally, place pavers around the rim of the pit and extend it out a few feet to create a small patio and to discourage new plants from growing too close to the fire. If you live in a windy area, build a wall on one side of the firepit to block the wind.
