Though plants usually get nutrients and moisture needed for growth and reproduction from soil, some plants obtain nutrients from the humidity (such as rainfall) in their environment. Bromeliads, a member of the pineapple family; ferns; and bulb plants such as iris and narcissus can thrive if grown in rocks and water.

Guzmania Lingulata

Guzmania lingulata is a bromeliad. The plant is cultivated primarily for its beautiful star-shaped flower that lasts for several months. It can bloom year-round and grows in slightly acidic soil or rocks and water. Plant in partial shade or indirect sunlight. Guzmania needs moderate temperatures and humid conditions to grow.

Osmunda

Osmunda is a deciduous flowering fern. There are 12 species of this hardy ancient fern. Plant seedlings in water, using rocks to anchor the roots. The seedlings also can be planted in moist soil near a water feature in a garden. Pull new sprouts to keep the fern from getting too large.

Iris Laevigata

Laevigata like open, sunny locations and grow well in rocks and water. The flowers bloom early in the summer. The plant has sword-like, soft green leaves. Plant laevigata in about 3 inches of rocks and water. Cut off spent flower stems.
