The firestick succulent plant (Euphorbia tirucalli), also called pencil tree, is an unusual looking bush that is covered in skinny branches with very few leaves. Like most succulents, it requires very little water to thrive and will do well as long as its basic growing requirements are met. It is hardy in USDA Zones 10 through 13 and is grown as a houseplant in all other areas.
Fill a growing container three-fourths of the way with cactus growing mix. Plant the firestick succulent plant at the same depth it was growing in its original container.
Water until the soil feels moist, but not wet. Move the container to a location that receives sun most of the day.
Add water only when the soil feels completely dry. Adding too much water to this plant can quickly kill it, because it retains moisture in its leaves.
Feed with cactus fertilizer during late spring by sprinkling it around the base of the plant.
Prune to remove dead or damaged branches as you notice them. You can also trim the plant to control size and prevent it from becoming too heavy on top.
Reduce watering to once every three weeks during fall and winter. Stop fertilizing completely during this period.
