Legumes are plants that are part of the Fabaceae family. Some common examples of legumes include beans, peas, alfalfa, peanuts, soy, lentils, clover, mesquite and carob. Legumes are dry fruits that are also known as pods. There are various different health advantages associated with regularly consuming legumes.

Food Cravings

Legumes are beneficial as they can reduce food cravings. They do this by providing the body with both nutrients and energy without causing the pancreas deluge the body with insulin. Many common foods and ingredients force the pancreas to emit insulin in abundance, such as high fructose corn syrup, white rice and sugar. This causes a sharp drop in the body's glucose level, which results in cravings for food. Legumes have the opposite effect of these foods, which are all high up on the glycemic index.

Stablizing Blood Sugar Levels

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic medical condition that is characterized by abnormally high glucose levels within the blood. It is the most common type of diabetes. Eating legumes can help prevent this condition. When legumes are eaten, as opposed to refined carbohydrates, they enable the body to keep a healthy glucose level, which in turn permits the pancreas to operate normally, and also not to produce excessive insulin amounts. This prevents Type 2 diabetes from occurring. Regularly eating too many refined starches causes the pancreas to cease production of insulin.

Nutrients

Legumes are an essential factor in any healthy and balanced diet. Legumes are a rich source of protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates, as well as vital minerals like zinc, magnesium and potassium. Legumes are also extremely low-fat and inexpensive. Legumes provide the body with protein, which can help increase energy and strength, as well as promote overall health and well-being.

Cholesterol

Legumes consist of large quantities of soluble fiber, which helps in decreasing levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which is considered to be "bad" cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can bring upon heart disease.

Skin

When legumes are cooked and eaten, they can offer nourishment to the complexion. Legumes can help give skin a natural glow, and also reduce wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles and crow's feet.

Sperm Count

Men that have lower sperm counts can eat cooked legumes in order to increase their levels. If legumes are eaten in one meal daily, this can help raise the levels. Cooked legumes should be eaten alongside leafy, green vegetables for maximum results. The vegetables should be steamed.

Thiamine

Thiamine is a water soluble B vitamin, and one of the primary components of legumes. It is a nutrient that can help treat various different ailments, including hemorrhoids, fibroids, beriberi and psychological disorders.
