How to Make a Topiary Ball

A topiary is an art form of shaping artificial or real plants and flowers into decorative shapes that can be used as centerpieces for special events such as weddings and anniversary parties or simply to spruce up a home decor. Using artificial flowers allows you to keep your masterpiece indefinitely and with no care on your part such as watering, fertilizing and trimming. Make this topiary ball with craft supplies and artificial flowers for relatively little cost and no previous experience.

Step 1

Use a 4-inch diameter clay flower pot for your topiary ball. Fill the pot with floral clay to within 2 inches from the rim.

Step 2

Holding three 8-inch long cinnamon sticks together, insert them into the center of the floral clay. Push the cinnamon sticks down about 3 inches to secure.

Step 3

Take a 4-inch size foam ball and carefully center it over the ends of the cinnamon sticks. Gently push the ball down over the top 1 inch of the sticks.

Step 4

Select any artificial flower you wish to use for your topiary ball and cut the stems with wire cutters to 1-inch lengths. Insert the flower stems into the foam ball starting at the top and working downward until the whole ball is completely covered.

Step 5

Place a handful of Spanish moss over the top of the flower pot to hide the clay. If desired you can place a few silk leaves over the moss to complete the topiary ball.
