Overview

Most varieties of grass seed will grow in sandy soil as long as you amend the soil to add nutrients. Sand dries out faster than other types of soil because it is less dense. Adding nutrients to the surface will make it more conducive to grass growth. Watering is also especially important because 30 percent of grass seed can die if it doesn't have sufficient moisture. Plant grass in the spring or summer for best results.

Step 1

Weed the planting area to avoid competition among the weeds and new grass. Pick up debris such as stones and break up soil clumps that are larger than 1 inch in diameter.

Step 2

Run a rototiller over the sand to loosen the top 6 inches. Grass roots need loose soil with air pockets to spread.

Step 3

Add nutrients to the sand to encourage grass growth. Put down 6 inches of compost. This will add moisture to the sand.

Step 4

Work the compost into the sand with a rake or rototiller, depending on the size of the yard. Combine until you have an even mixture.

Step 5

Spread a fertilizer that is high in phosphorus or one made specifically for starting seeds. Follow the instructions on the label. Mix the food into the top few inches of soil.

Step 6

Spread the grass seed with a hand or mechanical spreader, following the instructions on the seed bag. Make sure it's evenly spread to avoid competition or gaps.

Step 7

Rake the seed gently into the amended soil. Water until moist. Don't water too much or you'll wash the seeds away. Keep the amended sand moist until the grass sprouts. Because the sand loses nutrients, you need to pay it extra attention.
