A topiary is the art of making decorative shapes from flowers or plants, silk or real. Making a topiary at home can be done with with silk flowers and craft supplies to create a popular home decoration; making your own is less expensive than purchasing a ready-made topiary from the store. A few simple steps and basic supplies will have you creating a masterful topiary in relatively little time.
Select an urn-shaped vase approximately 4 to 6 inches in diameter. Place a piece of floral foam in the vase and pieces as needed to fill to the top.
Insert an 8-inch long stick into the middle of the floral foam in the vase. Push down at least 3 inches for security. Place a handful of Spanish moss over the top of the vase to cover the foam.
Push a 4-inch floral foam ball onto the top end of the stick down about 2 inches. Be careful that the stick does not get pushed clear through the ball.
Use wire cutters to cut the silk rose stems to 2 inches long. Insert the roses into the foam ball, covering it completely.
Tie a piece of ribbon around the stick underneath the foam ball. Lay a couple roses over the moss on top of the vase if desired.
