How to Make a Kitchen Compost Bin

Kitchen composting reduces the amount of waste your household produces. Compost bins break down food scraps such as fruit and vegetable peelings, paper waste and even yard waste. Once these food scraps have been broken down into humus by your kitchen compost bin, they can be spread over a vegetable garden as recycled soil. It is easy to make your own effective compost bin at home.

Step 1

Wash the coffee can and its lid with soap and water and dry them.

Step 2

Use a drill and 1/4 inch bit to drill 10, equally spaced holes all over the lid of the coffee container.

Step 3

Place the lid bottom side up.

Step 4

Squeeze several dots of glue evenly over the surface of the underside of the lid (avoid the holes).

Step 5

Lay the charcoal filter circle over the super glue to affix it to the underside of the coffee lid. Press it down lightly with your fingertips and leave it to dry for a few seconds.

Step 6

Place the lid on your kitchen compost bin.
