Plants Used in Hanging Baskets in the Summer

Hanging baskets filled with summer-blooming flowers create a burst of color and add visual impact to the home and garden. Suspended overhead, hanging baskets are ideal hanging from a backyard pergola or lining a front porch. Maintaining a consistent amount of moisture is key to a successful hanging basket. Fill the container with water and allow it to drip out of the basket, a sign that the water has penetrated all levels of the plant.

Verbena Imagination

Verbena imagination (Verbena speciosa "Imagination") is an annual flower with a rapid growth rate and draping blooms, ideal for a summer hanging basket. Growing 1 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide, verbena imagination has clusters of purple flowers that emerge in spring and last until frost. Drought- and frost-tolerant, verbena flowers make for a hardy and long-lasting container summer flower variety. The bright green, dissected foliage of verbena imagination holds the masses of cascading blooms. A butterfly attractant, it requires full sun only and well-drained, moist soil. To grow in other areas of the garden, divide verbena in spring. Plant verbena imagination in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) hardiness zones 10 to 11.

Surfinia Petunia

Surfinia petunia (Petunia integrifolia) is an annual flower with a vigorous growth rate and showy flowers. A summer bloomer, surfinia petunia cascades between 1 and 3 feet over containers and hanging baskets. The five-lobed flowers are violet and grow 1 ½ inches wide to fill the hanging basket with color. The branching foliage is bright green to contrast with the flowers. Surfinia petunias do not require deadheading and thrive in baskets combined with other rapid growers. They require full sun only and loamy soil with a moderate amount of water. These flowers are hardy in all USDA plant zones.

King of Hearts Bleeding Heart

King of hearts bleeding heart (Dicentra "King of Hearts") is a perennial flower with a clumping growth habit. Growing 1 to 3 feet tall and wide, king of hearts bleeding heart has rose, heart-shaped clustering flowers that appear to be nodding down to the garden. The parsley-like foliage is bright green to contrast with the blooms. Tucked into a hanging basket, bleeding heart has a long-lasting blooming season. King of hearts bleeding heart attracts hummingbirds to the basket to create the quintessential garden feel. They require full sun to partial shade and a medium amount of moisture. Plant in USDA zones 5 to 9.
