How to Make a Homemade Weed Killer

Many store-bought weed killers are on the market. These products will do an effective job of removing the weeds in your lawn. Unfortunately, they contain chemicals you may not want to use around members of your family--including pets who enjoy playing outdoors. Fortunately, it's possible to make a homemade weed killer from everyday household ingredients.

Step 1

Pour your vinegar in a large bucket, and add your salt. Stir until the salt has dissolved. These are the active ingredients that will kill the weeds.

Step 2

Add the liquid dish detergent to the vinegar/salt mixture. The dish detergent is a binder. It will keep the active ingredients attached to the weeds.

Step 3

Stir your mixture one final time with a spoon and transfer it to a garden sprayer.

Step 4

Spray your weeds with this mixture. It is not necessary to spray the soil. Just get the leaves wet with the homemade weed killer and the weeds will begin to die.

Step 5

Spray again in a few days, if necessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid spraying your homemade weed killer on plants you want to keep. It will kill any vegetation it comes in contact with.
