How to Care for a Majestic Palm

Majestic palm, more commonly known as majesty palm or Ravenea rivularis, is a tropical, perennial tree grown for its attractive foliage, massive trunk and ease of cultivation. The plant typically reaches 35 to 40 feet in height, though any size can be maintained with regular pruning. The large, arching, evergreen leaves serve as the plant's focal point, as they reach 2 to 3 feet in length. Native to Africa, the majestic palm tree requires warm, humid conditions to thrive and makes an excellent houseplant in most regions of the United States.

Step 1

Plant majestic palm in a container filled with a well-drained potting mix consisting of one part coarse sand, one part peat moss and one part potting soil. Keep the plant in a location that receives full sunlight to light shade, such as a south-, east- or west-facing window.

Step 2

Maintain a consistent temperature of 60 to 85 degrees F at all times to maximize growth and health. Place a thermometer near majestic palm to ensure the temperature stays within the recommended range or development will suffer.

Step 3

Run a humidifier near majestic palm at all times to emulate the plant's humid native habitat. Replenish the water in the humidifier whenever necessary. Alternatively, mist the plant twice daily with a spray bottle filled with lukewarm water.

Step 4

Water majestic palm once every five to seven days to keep the soil evenly moist at all times. Use warm water to avoid shocking the plant with sudden heat or cold. Decrease watering frequency to once every 10 days during winter, when the plant is dormant.

Step 5

Feed once per year during spring using a slow-release granular fertilizer to gradually add nutrients to the soil throughout the growing season. Apply following the directions on the package for the best results.

Step 6

Re-pot majestic palm once every three to five years, or whenever it has outgrown its original container. Increase the size of the container by at least 3 inches to accommodate the plant's root system. Use a fresh growing medium to ease the transplanting process.
