How to Install the Engine Cut Off Handle on a Murray Push Mower

Overview

Replacing a cut off handle that has corrosion is not difficult unless you forget how the old handle came off the mower. Murray push mowers make installation of the cut off handle a straight forward process. The cut off handle sits in between the stationary handle without any fasteners. The engine stop cable has a t-clip that will fit inside a notch on the cut off handle.

Step 1

Assemble the lever bracket to the left end of the cut off handle. Slide the end of the cut off handle in between the holders on the bracket. There is a hole on the holder that mounts to the stationary handle.

Step 2

Insert the left side end of the cut off handle into the top inside hole on the left of the stationary handle. The lever bracket will sit across the stationary handle as you insert the cut off handle.

Step 3

Insert the right end of the cut off handle into the upper hole on the right side of the stationary handle. Fasten the lever bracket to the left side of the stationary handle with the retaining screw and nut driver.

Step 4

Place the cut off handle in the down position. Place the t-handle end of the engine stop cable into the slot in the center of the cut off handle.

Step 5

Place the opposite end of the stop cable on the emergency stop lever on the left side of the mower engine. The stop lever is a small spring-loaded lever on the side of the engine that will have two holes on the end to accept the cable angle bracket. You will need to pull the stop cable with some force to connect the angle bracket on the end of the stop cable into the stop lever.
