The Japanese plum is a deciduous fruit tree that can reach heights up to 30 feet with an equivalent spread. This tree blooms throughout the spring months with clusters of showy white flowers. The Japanese plum tree is an adaptable tree that thrives in most loamy soils. It produces small round fruits that range in colors from yellow to red and violet. The Japanese plum is one of the more disease-resistant plum variations but is susceptible to frost damage and injury.
Identify a planting location for the Japanese plum tree. Select a well-drained location with nutrient-rich soil. Ensure that the location receives at least eight to 10 hours of full sunlight each day.
Dig a planting bed for the Japanese plum tree that is slightly larger than the width and depth of the root system. Fill the prepared hole with water and allow the water to settle into the ground.
Inspect the root system of the fruit tree. Use sharp, sterile pruning shears to cut away any damaged, dying or wilted roots from the system. Cut the root as close to the base of the root system as possible.
Position the Japanese plum tree in the center of the hole and fill the hole with the removed soil. Ensure that the graft union line of the tree rests 1 inch above the planting surface and that no bare roots are exposed. Press the soil firmly around the tree to secure its upright position.
Irrigate the Japanese plum tree immediately after planting to remove air pockets and promote a healthy establishment. Provide the tree with about 1 inch of water.
Head back the newly planted tree by removing approximately 1/3 of the tree's top. Continue to train the Japanese plum to develop a strong framework. Prune the tree annually in the spring, just before bud break.
