Directions for Fertilizing Astilbe Rheinland

Overview

Astilbe 'Rheinland' is a flowering perennial that blooms in late spring and summer in plumes of fluffy pink flowers. Gardeners enjoy this plant not only for its beauty, but for its ability to attract butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden. They grow in partial to full shade and make a striking statement in the background of the woodland-themed garden. Astilbe are heavy feeders, and the Rheinland variety is no exception. Fertilize the Rheinland in spring, just prior to flowering and then again in October.

Step 1

Rake a 3-foot area around the Astilbe Rheinland to remove any leaves and other detritus. Remove any mulch.

Step 2

Water the the top 4 inches of soil around the astilbe.

Step 3

Sprinkle the fertilizer, at the rate suggested on the fertilizer package, in a 1-foot radius around the base of the Rheinland plant.

Step 4

Using the rake, gently mix the fertilizer into the top 2 inches of soil.

Step 5

Water the astilbe Rheinland again, with the fine mist setting on the hose. Water just enough to make sure the fertilizer gets wet.

Step 6

Apply 3 inches of fresh mulch around the base of the plant.
