How to Choose Lawn Mower Blades

Purchasing the correct blade for your lawn mower is crucial to the health of your lawn and to the longevity of your lawn mower. Lawn mowers come in many different cutting widths. Some are regular lawn mowers and some are mulching lawn mowers. Each uses a different length or type of blade.

Step 1

Look over the operation manual for your lawn mower closely to see if you have a regular lawn mower or a mulching lawn mower.

Step 2

Disconnect the spark plug wire and lay your lawn mower down on its side. Locate the center bolt that holds the blade to the lawn mower.

Step 3

Take a tape measure and measure the entire length of the lawn mower blade diagonally from cutting edge to cutting edge.

Step 4

Take this information with you to your local home improvement store or garden center and purchase the correct replacement blade.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear heavy gloves when handling the lawn mower blade. It is very sharp and will cause injury to bare skin.
