Mimosa plants are prized for exquisite, globe-shaped blooms and peculiar behavior. The Mimosa pudica, from the Mimosaceae family, originated in Brazil and adapted to many climates the world over. Mimosa pudica plants grow to a height of 5 feet with a 3-foot spread. The slender, prickly stems and branches sport fern-like foliage that shies away and folds up when touched or exposed to flame and in the dark hours.
Mimosa pudica seeds should be soaked in hot water (at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit) and left overnight, until seeds swell. Presoaked seeds tend to germinate more quickly than those sown dry.
While mimosa plants thrive in a wide range of soil conditions, use a well-draining seed-starter potting mix for germination. Moisten potting mix slightly before sowing seeds.
Light and Heat
Mimosa pudica plants are frost, drought and shade intolerant. Germination should take place in a location that offers many hours of sunlight or under growing lamps for best results. Keep temperatures constant between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit during germination.
Sowing Mimosa Seeds
Sow mimosa seeds shallowly and then cover with a thin layer of potting mix. For best results, sow several seeds and then select the best specimens when plants reach 4 inches in height.
Soil should be moist but not soggy during germination, and never allowed to dry out. Cover seed containers with plastic wrap or clear plastic bags to maintain proper humidity levels during germination.
