Indoor shrubs with yellow variegated foliage add brightness and interest to a room. The variegation ranges from creamy yellow to gold to bright chartreuse.
Most yellow variegated shrubs need bright light to maintain their color, but should not be set in the direct sun. Indoor shrubs should be placed where they do not get extremely cold or hot drafts. They should be watered and fertilized regularly. Avoid over-watering or leaving water in the saucer under the pot, as this can cause root and crown rot.
The new leaves of Philodendron 'Moonlight' are bright chartreuse and turn dark chartreuse as they mature. The plant grows 24 inches tall and wide. Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) have variegated leaves in many colors. They are slow growing plants and may reach 5 feet tall after many years. 'Petra' has shiny colorful leaves in shades of yellow, bronze and red, and 'Gold Dust' has glossy green leaves with bright yellow splotches
Dumb Cane (Diffenbachia amoena 'Wilson's Delight') has large green and yellow variegated leaves. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall, and 1 to 2 feet wide. The stems, foliage and sap of Dumb Cane are poisonous.
The Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana') has long green leaves striped with yellow, while the foliage of D. deremensis 'Warneckei Lemon Lime' is striped bright green and yellow. Both plants have slender columnar forms with thick bare trunks. Usually three or more plants are set in a pot together for a fuller display.
The succulent leaves of Snake Plant (Sansevieria spp.) grow in stiff erect clusters up to 5 feet tall, and 2 feet wide. The foliage of one variety is dark green with yellow bands.
Guzmania spp. bromeliads grow up to 30 inches tall, and 24 inches wide. They have long, stiff, upright green leaves, with a cluster of yellow, orange or red leaves in the middle. When the insignificant flowers finish blooming, the plant will die.
Golden Pothos (Scindapsus aureus; syn. Epipremnum aureum) has green, heart-shaped leaves with golden markings. Neon Pothos has bright chartreuse foliage. Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium spp.) is also known as Butterfly Nephthytis. The foliage is heart shaped with yellow, white or silver markings. All of these plants can be grown in a hanging basket or trained up a totem or pole.
