How to Replace Mower Batteries

Inevitably you will need to replace the battery in your mower. When replacing the battery it is a good idea to take the old one to the store for the replacement. The store you purchase the battery from will dispose of your old battery properly. Battery replacement is a straightforward process that is universal among manufacturers. The only slight differences may be the hold down plate or bar that keeps the battery secure to the mounting plate within the engine compartment.

Step 1

Park the lawn mower on a level surface and set the parking brake. Remove the keys from the ignition. Open the hood to your lawn mower and locate the battery. The battery is usually near the inside wall close to the steering wheel.

Step 2

Remove the two nuts that secure the hold down plate to the two threaded bolts with a socket wrench. Pull the hold down plate off the bolts and away from the battery.

Step 3

Locate the negative and positive battery cables on the side of the battery. The positive cable is red and the negative cable is black. When removing any battery from a mower or even an automobile, remove the negative cable from the battery first.

Step 4

Loosen and remove the bolt securing the negative cable to the battery with a wrench. Pull the negative cable away from the battery. Loosen and remove the bolt securing the positive cable with a wrench and pull the positive cable away from the battery.

Step 5

Lift the battery off the battery mounting plate and take it to an auto parts store or a home improvement center for a replacement. Place the new battery on the battery mounting plate inside the mower engine compartment.

Step 6

Pull the plastic plugs off the cable terminal mounting holes on the battery. Place the positive cable over the terminal mounting hole with a "+" beside the hole. Thread the mounting bolt into the terminal hole to secure the cable to the battery and tighten with a wrench.

Step 7

Place the negative cable over the opposite terminal mounting hole that will have a "-" sign and secure the cable to the battery with the securing bolt. Tighten the bolt with the wrench.

Step 8

Slide the hold down plate over the two threaded rods on each side of the battery mounting plate and the top of the battery. Secure the hold down plate with the retaining nuts and tighten with a socket wrench.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not lay tools on the battery or touch the metal frame with tools when removing the cables. This could cause the tool to short against the frame and cause shock.
