Types of Seed Corn

Corn is a food staple of literally hundreds of different cultures, and comes in an array of varieties. The best type of corn seed to grow is one that is ideal for your region, climate and soil quality. Choose a variety that's well suited for your purposes, whether you want to consume it yourself or feed it to cattle.

Sweet Corn

Sweet corn is popular for its easy availability, juiciness and rich, sweet flavor. The seed has ragged edges and the main reason it is so sweet is because it has a gene that prevents a certain amount of sugar from transforming into starch. In the southern regions of the United States, it is usually grown as a winter crop.

Dent Corn

This variety is one of the most common types of corn sold in the United States, mostly because it is used as food for both humans and animals. Dent corn gets its name from the small dent in the top of the seed's crown. This starchy seed was first grown by Southeastern Indians.

Flint Corn

Compared to dent corn, this variety has a small amount of starch. It is one of the oldest varieties, as it was one of the first types of corn used by the Europeans. Flint corn is best grown in temperate regions and flourishes with little maintenance.

Flour Corn

Flour corn has a large amount of starch--more than dent corn. It is probably the least common corn seed variety, and grows in arid regions. It gets its name because American Indians used it to make flour since it was so soft.

Waxy Corn

Waxy corn has a different type of starch than the other corn seeds and a waxy appearance. First developed in China, this mutation occurred when mixed with dent strains from the United States. It is used primarily for making a starch similar to tapioca starch. It is not easy to grow and requires a lot of upkeep and attention.
