Troy Bilt weed trimmers are a subsidiary brand of the Modern Tool and Dye Company. The brand is sold across the U.S. and Canada through outlets such as Lowe's. The Troy Bilt Weed Trimmer is designed with a rotating head that turns either one or two monofilament lines to trim grass and weeds in hard-to-reach places. With regular use of your trimmer, the monofilament line wears away. Regular maintenance of your trimmer includes replacement of the monofilament line.
Disconnect the spark plug by pulling the spark plug boot off the end of the plug before changing the monofilament line.
Grasp the cutting head in one hand to hold it in place. Unscrew the bump knob on the end of the head by turning it counterclockwise with your other hand.
Grasp the inner reel, and pull it upward to remove it from the cutting head.
Clean grass debris and pollen from the inner reel and the cutting head with a clean cloth.
Pull the spring away from the inner reel.
Determine if you have a split line or single line head by looking at the inner reel. A split line reel has slotted holes for the monofilament line in the side of the reel. The twin holes on the side of a single line reel does not have slots in the holes on the side of the reel.
Cut a length of new monofilament line that is 20 foot long.
Double the line in half.
Place each end of the line through one of the two holes in the side of the reel. Pull the line all the way through the holes so that the loop left is as small as possible.
Wind the line in even layers around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the side of the line. Do not let the lines overlap.
Insert the ends of the lines into the two holding slots on the side of the reel. Place the spring back on the inner reel.
Thread the ends of the line through the eyelets on the outer spool. Push the reel back into the outer spool. Screw the bump knob back in place.
Reconnect the spark plug boot.
Cut 10 feet of monofilament line.
Insert this line through one of the slotted holes on the inner reel. Pull the line through until only about 4 inches of line is sticking out.
Insert this short end of line through the second hole, and pull it through tightly to make the loop between the two holes as small as possible.
Pull the line back about 6 inches, and work the extra length through the slot.
Wind the line in even layers around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the side of the line. Do not let the line overlap.
Insert each end of the line into the two holding slots on the side of the reel. Place the spring back on the inner reel.
Thread the ends of the line through the eyelets on the outer spool. Push the reel back into the outer spool. Screw the bump knob back in place.
Reconnect the spark plug boot.
