Overview

Carpet roses (sometimes called flower carpet roses or wonder roses) are highly desirable for their ease of care and profusion of beautiful blooms. These hardy flowers were hybridized to withstand diseases such as leaf spot, rust and mildew. Carpet roses are fast-growing and do resemble a "carpet of roses" if they are left to grow unchecked. Once established, these roses require only basic culture and can be grown as a hedge, ground cover or container plant.

Step 1

Choose the right location for your carpet roses. These hardy shrubs will grow well in any type of soil, including clay, but like all roses they prefer loamy, well-draining soil. Carpet roses grow best in full sunlight, but if you live in a very hot, dry climate, select a site that receives some afternoon shade. Dappled or filtered afternoon shade is ideal.

Step 2

Water your carpet roses often. These are thirsty plants. Keep the soil moist but not water-saturated, as this can lead to root rot or other soil fungus growth. Use a soaking or drip hose and give the ground a deep, slow watering. Two or three times a week during the growing season should be enough in all but the hottest climates.

Step 3

Prune the carpet roses back in late January to whatever length you desire. These flowers can handle hardy pruning, but leave at least 10 inches of canes for spring growth.

Step 4

Feed your carpet roses once each year with a balanced (10-10-10, 14-14-14 or similar), slow-release, water-soluble fertilizer in the spring. In addition, give the plant a quick feeding after you prune it in late January with a handful of rose food.

Things You'll Need
